Robert Smith collection, 1814-1932.

Correspondence among members of the Chandler family of South Windsor and Norwalk, Connecticut, of the Lyon family of New York, Montreal and Connecticut, and of the Moore family of Hartford, Connecticut. The bulk of the correspondence is from Georgianna V. Lyon to her daughter Louise Lyon Moore, 1913-1923, and to Louise from her sister Isabel Lyon Ashcroft of Mamaroneck, NY. Louise was married to Jesse Moore, a bond salesman with Richter & Co. in Hartford, Conn. Louise also received letters from extended family members and friends, and from a godson in France. The next largest segment of correspondence belongs to Leonidas Chandler of South Windsor, Conn., a farmer and apparently a citizen active in town politics. His correspondence dates 1864-1913. His son Frederick L. Chandler was in law and real estate in Norwalk, Conn., and he wrote frequent letters to his parents Leonidas and Celia, 1899-1919. Bessie, Frederick's wife, is represented by letters to her mother-in-law Celia Chandler, 1915-1918. The collection also includes letters to Samuel and Henry Camp of Durham, Connecticut, 1821-1824; letters to Mrs. Powers from M.L. Catlin, 1873-1887; letters to Erwin, 1871-1873, letters to Frances Olcott, 1870-1893; records of the South Windsor schools; and printed ballots. Of interest is the correspondence and papers of Florence Griswold, and an ecclesiastical tax list for Old Saybrook, 1814. Many of the letters remain only partly identified as they are addressed to "cousin" or "Aunt" with no last names. No envelopes were found with this collection.
